Groundbreaking scheduled for Robertson Bridge Stimulus project

LYNCHBURG – State and local officials have been invited to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Robertson Bridge in the City of Danville.  The event is planned for Monday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the open field across from 4050 Riverside Drive and the public is encouraged to attend.

“We are very excited to see the Robertson Bridge project underway,” said Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders.  “This structure is a vital part of the Danville transportation system and integral to our economic future.”

In April 2009, then-Governor Timothy M. Kaine and Congressman Tom Perriello announced that $28.9 million from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) would be used to fully fund the construction of a replacement for the current structure.

The current two-lane structure was built in 1940 to span the Dan River.  Due to increased traffic volume and business in the area, the bridge is often congested.  The new structure will consist of five-lanes with a multi-use trail for pedestrians and bicycle traffic.  It is slated for completion in August 2012.
