ROUTE 26 REMAINS CLOSED NEAR APPOMATTOX
APPOMATTOX – Motorists will likely be unable to use portions of Route 26, north of the Town of Appomattox, for much of the afternoon today following an early morning gas pipeline fire.
Route 26 is closed near Route 677 and traffic is being detoured on Route 613 and Route 660. .
Emergency crews remain on the scene. The pipeline has been shut off but residual gas in the line could still be burning.
Once the initial incident is clear, power lines will have to be restored and the road cleaned up before traffic use the road again.
There is damage reported to the road; however, temporary repairs can likely be made to allow traffic on the road. Signs and message boards will alert motorists to any changes in condition.
