VDOT Hampton Roads District Prepares for Hermine

SUFFOLK – The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Hampton Roads District continued preparations Friday for the arrival of Tropical Storm Hermine by moving personnel and equipment to the Eastern Shore and finishing readiness checks throughout South Hampton Roads, Western Tidewater and the Peninsula.

With forecasts putting potentially the worst flooding and winds on the Eastern Shore, particularly near Chincoteague, the District has sent a 14-person crew from its Franklin Residency and five employees from a signal and sign crew to the Shore in advance of the storm. Those teams will bring five dump trucks, a truck-mounted excavator and other vehicles to help the Accomac Residency with storm-response and clean-up.

Across the District, construction sites and portable message sites have been secured, and workers will stand ready over the weekend to respond to downed trees and other obstructions on state roads and interstates.

The District Area Command center will begin operations Friday night to monitor road conditions and other impacts from Tropical Storm Hermine.

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may reduce or suspend its service during the storm Saturday because of high tides. Motorists should expect potential delays and use the U.S. 17 James River Bridge as an alternate route.

For updates on ferry service, motorists can call the ferry hotline at 1-800-VA-FERRY. Motorists are also encouraged to visit www.511virginia.org, call 511, download Virginia’s free 511 mobile app or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1680 AM or call the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information.
