COMMONWEALTH TRANSPORTATION BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR I-95 MEHERRIN RIVER BRIDGES REPLACEMENT
Project will address deficiencies on two interstate bridges in Emporia
RICHMOND —The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $22.2 million contract today to Wagman Construction Inc. of York, Pa., to replace the northbound and southbound bridges on I-95 over the Meherrin River in Emporia in the Hampton Roads District.
The new bridges, located just south of U.S. 58 (Exit 11) in Greensville County, will meet current design standards and provide safer shoulder widths for motorists. During the first part of construction, crews will build a new southbound bridge to the west of the existing southbound bridge. Once complete, southbound traffic will shift to the new bridge, and northbound traffic will shift to the old southbound bridge. Work will then begin demolish and re-build the northbound bridge.
The project’s work schedule eliminates the need for a detour for traffic in both directions. All lanes will be open during peak travel periods. Drivers will experience some overnight single-lane closures during construction, as well as traffic shifts once the new bridges are built.
Construction will begin in Spring 2016, and the project is scheduled to be complete in October 2019. More information is available at http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/hamptonroads/i95_bridge_replacement.asp.
