VDOT crews and contractors pretreating roads

HAMPTON ROADS – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are currently pretreating roads one day ahead of snow forecasted to arrive on Tuesday afternoon in the Hampton Roads District.

District crews will then mobilize tomorrow morning to monitor and treat roads as long as conditions exist.

Pre-treatment is a form of anti-icing where chemicals are applied to area roads up to 48 hours before a winter storm. This prevents a bond from forming between the pavement and the snow and ice after the storm starts.

Motorists are advised to delay travel during winter weather. If travel is necessary, use extreme caution. When approaching slow-moving equipment treating roads, slow down and give equipment operators the right of way.

Motorists are encouraged to visit, call 511, download Virginia’s free 511 mobile app or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1680 AM or call the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information. Information is also available on Twitter @VaDOTHR.
