I-64 High Rise Bridge work will continue as planned for Sunday, April 22

SUFFOLK– The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has revised the tunnel closure schedules for the Interstate 664 south Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) and the Interstate 64 east Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) due to weather forecasts predicting rain this weekend.

The new bridge and tunnel closure schedule is as follows:

I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT)
The southbound MMMBT tunnel closure previously scheduled to begin tonight, Friday, Apr. 20, at 8 p.m. has been rescheduled for Friday, Apr. 27, at 8 p.m., reopening on Monday, Apr. 30, by 6 a.m.

I-64 High Rise Bridge
The I-64 High Rise Bridge will still close in both directions on Sunday, Apr. 22, at 6:30 a.m. as planned. The closure will last approximately four hours. During this time crews will be installing a reconditioned motor.

I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT)
The I-64 east HRBT closure scheduled to begin Friday, Apr. 27, at 7 p.m. has been postponed until the weekend of Friday, May 4, to accommodate I-664 south MMMBT work.  

Gilmerton Bridge
All lanes of the Gilmerton Bridge (Route 13, Military Highway) will still close the weekend of Apr. 27, for maintenance operations. The bridge will close Friday, Apr. 27, at 8 p.m. and will reopen on Monday, April 30, by 5 a.m.

The detour for the I-64 High Rise Bridge is as follows:
• From I-64 west, motorists should take the Route 17 George Washington Highway exit.  Next make a left on George Washington Highway and proceed to Frederick Boulevard. Make a left onto Frederick Boulevard, then take the I-264 east ramp on the right. Proceed on I-264 east, through the Downtown Tunnel. Stay in the right lane and after exiting the tunnel take the I-464 south exit. Follow I-464 south until you reach the I-64 west exit.
• From I-64 east take the I- 464 north exit. Follow I-464 north to the I-264 west (Downtown Tunnel) exit. Proceed on I-264 west to the Frederick Boulevard exit. Exit at the bottom of the ramp and stay to the left. Make a left on Route 17 south. Follow Route 17 south to George Washington Highway and make a right. Proceed on George Washington Highway to the I-64 east ramp.
