CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE FOR JAMES CITY COUNTY’S CONGESTION AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Traffic making right hand turns will flow freely at intersection
JAMES CITY –Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews removed the last of the construction barrels this week from the intersection of Route 199 (Lightfoot Road), Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) and Strawberry Plains (Route 616). This project was considered necessary to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection.
Crews widened and repaved the roadways, in order to alleviate the hindrance on traffic flow when making right hand turns. Route 199 East traffic now has a separate lane for right turn movement onto Route 5 West. Also, the Route 199 East traffic has two left turn lanes onto Strawberry Plains.
From Strawberry Plains there is a new right turn lane and an acceleration lane onto Route 199 West, as well as two left turn lanes onto Route 199 East.
During the project VDOT, the contractor, James City County and local police worked together to coordinate lane closures and traffic shifts. Construction began in July 2010, and was completed in March 2011. The project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). George Nice & Sons, INC. was awarded the contract.
