FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Drivers should anticipate overnight lane closures on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area this week with several work zones scheduled starting tonight, July 22, through early Saturday, July 27.

Major construction activities for the I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project, also known as “Fred Ex” in Stafford County, started today and will continue this week.

The Fred Ex project will extend the I-95 Express Lanes from its southern terminus point at Exit 143/Garrisonville to Exit 133/Falmouth. The 10-mile extension of two reversible high-occupancy toll lanes will be built in the existing median of I-95.

Paving and maintenance work will also continue on I-95 near Exit 136/Centreport Parkway.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled:

Interstate 95 Southbound

Potomac Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 137

  • Monday – Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

Motorists should anticipate a single lane closure on I-95 southbound at the bridge over Potomac Creek, located at mile marker 137, for bridge repairs.

Exit 136/Centreport Parkway to Exit 133/Falmouth

  • Wednesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. and Friday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Saturday

Drivers can expect a single left lane closure overnight on I-95 southbound between mile markers 136 – 134, which is located between Exit 136/Centreport Parkway and Exit 133/Falmouth. Crews will be installing construction entrances. All lanes will open by 10 a.m. the following morning, except on Saturday, when all lanes reopen by 5 a.m.

Interstate 95 Northbound

Exit 136/Centreport Parkway

  • Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

Crews will continue paving on I-95 northbound between mile markers 135 – 137 near Exit 136/Centreport Parkway. One lane will be closed in the work zone at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. each night. Motorists should be alert for a temporary, rough travel surface in milled areas. All I-95 northbound lanes reopen by 4:30 a.m. the following morning.
