FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: Be Alert for Roadway Flooding, Potholes Following Intense Rain
VDOT crews are working overnight this evening in affected areas to provide traffic control and emergency drainage maintenance
FREDERICKSBURG – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are working across the Fredericksburg area this evening to respond to locations where intense rain has flooded state-maintained roads, especially in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid travel this evening in areas affected by flooding. A complete list of closed or partially closed roads is available by locality at 511Virginia.org.
Two lanes of Route 3 westbound remain closed in Spotsylvania County at the Gordon Road intersection due to flooding. Travelers should follow traffic control direction at the scene.
Motorists should not drive through standing water. If you come across a flooded road that has not been barricaded, turn around and use an alternate route.
Additionally, ponding on roadways may obscure the presence of potholes, especially at night.
VDOT crews will remain at work overnight in affected areas to install warning signs and barricades for road flooding, as well as to perform emergency drainage maintenance.
To report roadway flooding, or any roadway hazard, please call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).
Throughout this upcoming week, VDOT crews will focus on repairing potholes that have emerged following this weekend’s heavy rain and warmer temperatures.
Crews will focus on repairing potholes first on roads carrying the heaviest traffic, such as Interstate 95, primary and high-volume secondary roads.
Potholes can be reported 24 hours a day to VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.
Motorists can find real-time information about road or lane closures, traffic, incidents and road conditions in Virginia at 511Virginia.
VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula
