SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ON JONES POWELL ROAD STARTS JULY 10 IN SPOTSYLVANIA
Route 653 (Jones Powell Road) will be closed to through traffic between Belmont Road and Lawyers Road for approximately 2 weeks as crews level road to improve sight distance
FREDERICKSBURG – A project to flatten a rise on Route 653 (Jones Powell Road) in Spotsylvania County will start on Monday, July 10, and will close the road to through traffic for approximately two weeks.
A detour will be posted to guide motorists along the recommended route, which is Route 601 (Lawyers Road) and Route 652 (Belmont Road).
Jones Powell Road will be leveled slightly to reduce a vertical curve to improve sight distance for motorists.
The $125,000 revenue-sharing project is being jointly funded by Spotsylvania County and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Weather permitting, the road is estimated to re-open to through traffic by Friday, July 21.
Jones Powell Road carries an average of 340 vehicles a day, according to a VDOT traffic count.

VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula.
