ROUTE 684 (HOWERTON ROAD) WILL CLOSE NEXT WEEK IN ESSEX COUNTY
Pipe replacement will be underway between Boston Road and Johnville Road
FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 684 (Howerton Road) between Route 610 (Boston Road) and Route 611 (Johnville Road) in Essex County next week, as crews install a new crosspipe underneath the road.
Howerton Road will close to through traffic beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 3 through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in the Dunnsville area of the county.
A detour will be in place for approximately one week while construction is underway.
Two detour routes will be posted.
Through traffic and trucks should take the following detour route, which is approximately 14 miles:
- Route 17 (Tidewater Trail)
- Route 360 (Richmond Highway)
Local traffic may take the following detour route, which is approximately eight miles:
- Route 609 (Essex Mill Road)
- Route 610 (Boston Road)
- Route 611 (Johnville Road)
Message boards will be posted this week to alert motorists to the upcoming work and detour.
Howerton Road carries an average of 1,000 vehicles a day, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.

VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula.
