VDOT WILL REPLACE CULVERT ON ROUTE 605 (BALLS NECK ROAD) IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
Balls Neck Road will be closed to through traffic starting Thursday, Dec. 29

FREDERICKSBURG  –  Next week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin work to replace the culvert over Mill Creek on Route 605 (Balls Neck Road) in Northumberland County.

On Tuesday, Dec. 29, Balls Neck Road will be closed to through traffic at 9 a.m. The culvert is located near Route 679 (Crosshills Road) and Route 669 (Waddeys Road).

A detour will be in place for approximately six weeks while construction is underway.

Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately five miles:

  • Route 669 (Waddeys Road)
  • Route 606 (Shiloh School Road)
  • Route 200 (Dupont Memorial Highway)

Message boards will be posted this week to alert drivers to the upcoming work and detour.

VDOT crews will replace the existing corrugated metal pipe culvert.

The existing structure, constructed in 1974, is structurally deficient. The new culvert will be a reinforced concrete pipe.

Balls Neck Road carries an average of 140 vehicles a day, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.
