ROUTE 721 (SPARTA ROAD) IN CAROLINE COUNTY OPENS, DETOUR LIFTED
VDOT completes project to upgrade bridge over Maracossic Creek
FREDERICKSBURG – Route 721 (Sparta Road) in Caroline County has reopened to traffic at the bridge over Maracossic Creek.
In early November, Sparta Road was closed to through traffic near Route 640 (Maracossic Drive) and Route 654 (Pendleton Road) in the Sparta area of the county as Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews worked to improve the bridge.
VDOT crews replaced the existing bridge’s steel beams and deck with new timber, steel and guardrail in less than a month.
The upgraded bridge over Maracossic Creek is now open to traffic and the nine-mile detour has been lifted.
Built in 1960, the bridge had a weight restriction of 25 tons for single-axle vehicles and 35 tons for tractor trailers. With these improvements to the bridge, the current weight posting signs will be removed after final inspection later this week.
Approximately 1,700 vehicles cross the bridge each day, according to a recent VDOT traffic count.
Motorists can find real-time information on lane closures, work zones, traffic and other incidents on 511Virginia.
VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District includes the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford in the Fredericksburg area; Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster and Westmoreland counties in the Northern Neck; Essex, Gloucester, King & Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties in the Middle Peninsula.
