ROUTE 721 (NEWTOWN ROAD) RE-OPENS AT CAROLINE, KING AND QUEEN LINE
Temporary detour lifted as construction progresses to build a replacement bridge over Beverly Creek

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 721 (Newtown Road) has re-opened to traffic at the Caroline and King and Queen county line following a three-week temporary detour.

Construction is underway on a $2.7 million project to replace a structurally deficient bridge on Newtown Road over Beverly Creek. Temporary traffic signals remain activated on each bridge approach, and eastbound and westbound traffic will continue taking turns crossing the structure. Construction is scheduled to be completed on the replacement bridge in July 2017.

Traffic was detoured during October to shift over a temporary single lane bridge that was installed in March 2015. Shifting the temporary bridge was necessary to allow construction to begin on the permanent structure.

The new bridge will follow the original alignment of the road once completed. The temporary bridge will be removed at the end of the project.

Approximately 440 vehicles cross the bridge a day, according to a VDOT traffic count.
