MOTORISTS ASKED TO AVOID TRAVEL TODAY IN FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT
Interstate and primary roads are snow-covered this morning
FREDERICKSBURG – (5:30 a.m.) Driving conditions are hazardous this morning in the Fredericksburg area and western portions of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, with snow covering large portions of Interstate 95 and primary roads.
Motorists are advised to avoid nonessential travel today to allow crews to make progress plowing and treating roads.
Lower-volume secondary roads and subdivisions streets in the Fredericksburg area and western Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are in severe condition this morning, and are completely snow-covered.
On the eastern end of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, primary roads are in minor condition, with some bare pavement visible and isolated patches of snow and ice. Locations where primary road conditions are minor include Richmond, Lancaster, Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex counties.
VDOT crews are making repeated passes on Interstate 95 and primary roads to push snow off the road as quickly as it falls. Snow began falling shortly before midnight, and has continued through the early morning hours. Snow is forecast to change to freezing rain later today, which is anticipated to cause icy, slick road conditions.
VDOT crews will remain at work 24 hours a day, in rotating 12-hour shifts, to plow roads and apply sand, salt and treatment chemicals. Crews will remain at work until all roads are passable and safe for travel.
