FALL HILL AVENUE TRAFFIC WILL SHIFT TO NEW BRIDGE ON MONDAY, FEB. 29
New date announced due to weather conditions

FREDERICKSBURG – Fall Hill Avenue traffic in Fredericksburg will be shifted onto the first half of a newly constructed Interstate 95 overpass on Monday, Feb. 29.

Traffic was expected to move onto the new overpass on Thursday, Feb. 26, but the date was postponed due to weather conditions.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Fall Hill Avenue will be stopped for up to 10 minutes just before the traffic shift.

At around 10 a.m. Monday, eastbound traffic will be stopped and moved onto the new bridge. At approximately 1 p.m. Monday, westbound traffic will be stopped and moved onto the bridge.

Crews must briefly stop traffic to paint final lane markings leading to the bridge.

Motorists are encouraged to stay alert as they approach the work zone and follow direction from the flagging crew.

A new section of sidewalk will open as part of the overpass. The sidewalk crosses the southern side of the bridge. It will provide pedestrian access from the Heritage Park residential community to the vicinity of Noble Way.

Construction is progressing on the $44.4 million project to widen Fall Hill Avenue. The project will be completed in January 2017.

Fall Hill Avenue is being widened to four lanes with a raised median from Carl D. Silver Parkway to the Rappahannock Canal.

Mary Washington Boulevard will be extended from the hospital campus to intersect with Fall Hill Avenue in a roundabout, which will provide a new connection between Route 1 and Fall Hill Avenue.

When construction is finished, a sidewalk will be open along the entire southern side of Fall Hill Avenue between Carl D. Silver Parkway and the Rappahannock Canal. A shared use path will be built on the north side of Fall Hill Avenue.

Following the traffic shift, crews will demolish the existing bridge. Construction will then start to build the second half of the new overpass.
