BRIDGE PROJECT COMPLETE ON ROUTE 722 (NELSON HILL ROAD) IN CAROLINE
Nelson Hill Road re-opened to traffic Thursday afternoon

FREDERICKSBURG – Construction was completed today on a bridge rehabilitation project on Route 722 (Nelson Hill Road) over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County.

Nelson Hill Road re-opened to traffic this afternoon. A detour had been in place since construction began in April 2016.

The project improved the bridge’s condition and removed a weight posting by replacing the bridge’s superstructure. A new concrete deck and steel beams were installed.

Prior to the project, the bridge was considered structurally deficient, and had a weight limit of 24 tons for single-unit trucks, and 34 tons for tractor-trailers.

An average of 1,800 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to a VDOT traffic count.

The project contractor was Abernathy Construction Corp., of Glen Allen, Va. The project was completed on time and on budget.
