TRAFFIC SHIFT SCHEDULED NEXT WEEK AT GORDON ROAD PARK & RIDE LOT
New HOV carpooling, bus pickup and dropoff area to open

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will open a new carpool and slugging pickup and dropoff area next week in the Gordon Road Park & Ride lot, as well as more than 300 refurbished parking spaces.

Since mid-July, workers have paved and rebuilt the western half of the original lot. During the week of Aug. 17-21, the western half of the lot will re-open. On the same day, the eastern half of the original lot will close for reconstruction and paving.

Message boards and signs will direct High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) traffic to a new platform area for pickup and dropoff.

When the western half of the lot opens, 650 parking spaces will be available for public use during the final phase of construction.

When construction is complete this fall, the lot will have a total of 1,052 parking spaces.

About the Project

Construction to expand the Park & Ride commuter lot on Gordon Road began in fall 2014 and will be completed by December 2015.  The parking lot is located at the intersection of Route 3 and Gordon Road in Spotsylvania County.

In addition to 500 new parking spaces, the $7.2 million improvement project is adding:
• A dedicated slugging pickup and dropoff line
• A centralized area for buses
• A second entrance to the lot accessible from Harrison Road, in addition to the existing Gordon Road entrance
• A pedestrian sidewalk connecting the lot with surrounding commercial development

Spotsylvania Farmers Market

The Spotsylvania Farmers Market will remain open during all phases of construction. Market customers should park in the new, expanded section of the Gordon Road lot and walk to the market area.

On Friday evenings, vanpool drivers should park in the new parking area, as far to the north as possible. This will allow space for the Spotsylvania Farmers Market to operate on Saturdays, and for customers to have parking available close to the market.
