ROUTE 721 (NEWTOWN ROAD) NOW OPEN TO TRAFFIC
Temporary single lane bridge has been installed

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 721 (Newtown Road) has re-opened to traffic at Beverly Creek at the Caroline and King and Queen county line.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have installed a temporary single-lane bridge over Beverly Creek. The temporary bridge replaces the existing two-lane bridge.

A $2.8 million permanent bridge replacement project is scheduled to begin in June 2016.

Traffic signals are operating on each bridge approach. Eastbound and westbound traffic will take turns crossing the structure.

Due to the installation of traffic signals, VDOT closed Vessels Road at the western Newtown Road intersection, at the end closest to the Beverly Creek bridge. Vessels Road traffic cannot enter or exit at this intersection until the end of construction for the permanent bridge replacement.

Vessels Road traffic will detour to the eastern intersection with Newtown Road, which is a distance of approximately 1.1 miles.

An average of 440 vehicles a day crosses the Beverly Creek bridge on Newtown Road.

More information about the permanent bridge replacement project can be found online at  www.VirginiaDOT.org:
