ROUTE 615 (BURLEIGH ROAD) TO CLOSE TO TRAFFIC
Reconstruction project is underway to enhance safety, straighten ‘S’ curve on road
FREDERICKSBURG – A section of Route 615 (Burleigh Road) in Gloucester County will close to traffic between March 3 and May 22 to expedite construction on a reconstruction and widening project.
Construction began in late 2014 to straighten an “S” curve on Burleigh Road just east of Route 616 (Belroi Road). Traffic is currently reduced to a single lane in the project’s work zone on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Alternating traffic is controlled by a flagging crew.
Beginning next week, VDOT and its contractor will close the road to through traffic in the work zone for 10 weeks.
Crews will be removing soil, finishing road construction work, and installing two new drainage pipes underneath the road. Construction is expected to be complete in June 2015.
“Closing the road will allow us to finish the project approximately one month ahead of schedule,” said Sean Trapani, Saluda Residency Administrator. “The time to travel the detour is approximately the same amount of time residents have been delayed by the single-lane closure and flagging operation. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work quickly to finish this improvement, and re-open the road to travelers this summer.”
Signs have been posted along the detour route on Belroi Road and Route 17. Motorists should allow approximately 5 additional minutes of travel time due to the detour.
Approximately 1,900 vehicles travel Burleigh Road each day on average, according to a VDOT traffic count.
