ROUTE 606 (STONEWALL JACKSON ROAD) BRIDGE CLOSED IN CAROLINE COUNTY
Following inspection today, bridge over Poni River was closed immediately

FREDERICKSBURG – A bridge on Route 606 (Stonewall Jackson Road) in Caroline County was closed to traffic this afternoon after a bridge inspection today found severe deterioration in the bridge beams.

The Virginia Department of Transportation determined the bridge should be closed as soon as possible for motorist safety. Detour signs are being posted now to guide motorists along the detour route.

“Closing the bridge to traffic was the safest course of action to protect motorists,” said Annette Adams, P.E, VDOT Structure and Bridge Engineer, Fredericksburg District. “Today’s inspection found rapid deterioration in the bridge’s beams. We know this decision will have a significant impact on the daily travel of residents, businesses, and the community. We will announce a schedule as soon as possible to re-open the bridge.”

Motorists should follow posted signs along the recommended detour route, which can be used by trucks and passenger vehicles:
• Route 609 (Macedonia Road)
• Route 668 (Long Branch Road)
• Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)
• Route 1
• Route 606 (Stonewall Jackson Road)

A project is already under design to replace the bridge’s superstructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2016.

The bridge was built in 1962, and is structurally deficient. The bridge is inspected annually. It is a concrete pre-stressed box beam.

Approximately 1,900 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to a VDOT traffic count.

Additional information about VDOT’s bridge inspection program and individual bridge conditions are posted online at:
