ROUTE 602 (BURKES POND ROAD) BRIDGE OPEN IN GLOUCESTER COUNTY
Construction to replace bridge finished ahead of schedule

FREDERICKSBURG – This afternoon, Route 602 (Burkes Pond Road) re-opened to traffic at the bridge over Burkes Mill Stream in Gloucester County.

Construction work is complete on a $1.3 million bridge replacement project (photo, right). The project finished three months ahead of schedule.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) closed the bridge to traffic in September 2014 for motorist safety. A routine annual bridge inspection found additional deterioration among the bridge’s steel beams. VDOT had already scheduled a bridge replacement project to start in January 2015. Work was accelerated to start construction in December 2014.

The bridge carries an average of 1,000 vehicles a day, according to VDOT traffic data.

Additional information about VDOT’s bridge inspection program and individual bridge conditions are posted online at www.virginiaDOT.org.
