REMINDER: EXPECT DELAYS TONIGHT ON I-95 AT FREDERICKSBURG
After midnight, intermittent traffic stops will occur on Interstate 95 southbound at Fall Hill Avenue
FREDERICKSBURG – Southbound Interstate 95 traffic at Fredericksburg will be stopped intermittently tonight so concrete beams can be lifted over all travel lanes for construction of a new overpass at Fall Hill Avenue.
I-95 travelers are advised to use Route 1 to avoid delays. Message boards on I-95 will provide advance notice of lane closures and detour routes.
The Fall Hill Avenue overpass is located at mile marker 131, just south of the Rappahannock River bridges and Safety Rest Area. It is located between I-95 exit 130/Route 3 and exit 133/Route 17.
Tonight, a single lane of I-95 southbound will close at the overpass at 9:30 p.m. Two southbound lanes will close at 10 p.m.
Between midnight and 3 a.m. all traffic will be stopped four times so workers can lift beams over the travel lanes. Each traffic stop will last approximately 15 minutes. After each closure, the waiting queue of vehicles will be cleared from the scene.
All southbound lanes will re-open to traffic by 5 a.m. Thursday.
Virginia State Police are assisting with traffic control in the work zone.
Additional lanes closures have been scheduled on I-95 this week for beam lifts at the Fall Hill Avenue overpass.
I-95 Northbound Paving
Additionally, lane closures for interstate paving will be underway on I-95 northbound tonight in Stafford County.
Paving is scheduled tonight between exit 136/Centreport Parkway and exit 140/Courthouse Road in Stafford.
A single lane of I-95 northbound will close at 9 p.m. Two northbound lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Fall Hill Avenue Project
VDOT awarded a $30.7 million design-build contract to widen Fall Hill Avenue in April 2014 to Corman Construction, Inc., and Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP. Construction began in February 2015, and work will be completed in January 2017.
The existing Fall Hill Avenue bridge over Interstate 95 will be replaced with a four-lane bridge, to include a shared-use path and sidewalk.
Fall Hill Avenue will be widened to four lanes with a raised median from Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park) to just west of the bridge over the Rappahannock Canal.
Mary Washington Boulevard will be extended from the hospital campus to intersect with Fall Hill Avenue in a roundabout, which will provide a new connection between Route 1 and Fall Hill Avenue.
