Left turn lane was lengthened to hold more vehicles, accommodate new traffic pattern at Harrison Road intersection in Spotsylvania

FREDERICKSBURG — This week, an extended left turn lane opened to traffic on northbound Leavells Road in Spotsylvania County at the Harrison Road intersection.

The project was funded by the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Due to the number of angle crashes at the intersection of Leavells and Harrison roads, this project changed the traffic signal pattern to enhance safety.

Only protected left turns on a green arrow signal are now permitted from northbound Leavells Road onto westbound Harrison Road, and from southbound Salem Church Road onto eastbound Harrison Road.

The median crossover on Leavells Road at Route 1474 (Griffith Way) closest to the intersection was closed. Access to Griffith Way was maintained at a second crossover.

Construction on the project began in January 2015.

A contract for $221,198 was awarded to A & M Concrete Corp., of Dulles to build the project.

Motorists may encounter periodic single lane closures next week, as the project concludes and construction signs are removed.
