Bridge replacement project reaches halfway point in Westmoreland County

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 205 (James Monroe Highway) will be closed to all traffic on July 13-17 at the Mattox Creek bridge in Westmoreland County.

Message boards have been posted to notify motorists of the upcoming road closure.

Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists to the Route 3 and Route 301 alternate route during the closure.

Construction began in June 2014 on a project to replace a structurally deficient bridge over Mattox Creek. Work is finished on the first half of the new bridge. Construction is scheduled to be complete in July 2016.

The bridge is closing July 13-17 so workers can shift equipment and materials from the finished half of the new bridge to opposite side. New lane markings will be painted to guide traffic through the work zone.

When the bridge re-opens, traffic will travel on the newly constructed portion of the bridge.

The replacement bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes, with two 10-foot shoulders.
