NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN COMING TO ROUTE 17 ON WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15
Northbound traffic will shift to the right, and the traffic pattern between I-95 and McLane Drive will be restored to pre-construction conditions

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will shift northbound Route 17 traffic in Stafford County into new travel lanes on the right side of the highway next week.

New travel lanes, sidewalks, and curb and gutter have been built on the right side of northbound Route 17 between Interstate 95 and International Parkway.

During the evening hours of Wednesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 16, construction barrels will be removed from driveway entrances along this section of Route 17. Traffic will be shifted slightly right into the new lanes.

At the same time, a third through travel lane will be restored between I-95 and Falls Run Drive to help traffic merge onto Route 17 northbound from the Interstate 95 off-ramps.

This change will restore the traffic pattern on northbound 17 to pre-construction conditions between I-95 and McLane Drive.

“Thank you to drivers, businesses and residents for your continued patience with construction to widen Route 17 to six lanes between I-95 and Stafford Lakes Parkway,” said VDOT Fredericksburg District Administrator Marcie Parker, P.E. “We realize this project affects thousands of people traveling through the work zone each day, and we will continue to seek ways to minimize driver delay as we improve and expand Route 17.”

After the traffic shift, construction work will shift to the median of northbound Route 17 between McLane Drive and International Parkway.

Lane closures Oct. 15-16

To safely shift traffic, northbound Route 17 will be reduced to a single travel lane from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the evenings of Wednesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 16.

The work zone will begin near the Interstate 95 overpass and continue through International Parkway.

Motorists should stay alert for new pavement markings, and should follow traffic direction from law enforcement officials.

Complete traffic stops of up to 5 minutes may be required intermittently during the traffic shift so workers can install new traffic signal equipment. New traffic signals will be activated at five intersections on Route 17: McLane Drive, Falls Run Parkway, Plantation Drive, Lichfield Boulevard, and Banks Ford Parkway.
