SAFETY MEASURES ADDED AT ROUTE 205 AND ROUTE 628 INTERSECTION IN WESTMORELAND
New features will reduce speed limit, enhance motorist warning of stop sign ahead

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will add new safety measures at the intersection of Route 205 and Route 628 (Pomona Road/Stoney Knoll Road) in Westmoreland County.

The following changes will be made at the intersection by September 1, 2013:

  • The speed limit on Route 205 will be reduced to 45 mph from 55 mph at the intersection.
  • To make motorists aware of the reduced speed, “Reduced Speed Ahead” signs will be installed on Route 205 prior to the intersection.
  • Flags will be installed on the new 45 mph speed limit signs on Route 205 for a minimum of 90 days.
  • Pavement rumble strips will be installed adjacent to the “Stop Ahead” signs on Pomona Road and Stoney Knoll Road.

These recommendations emerged from a VDOT traffic study of the intersection. The study reviewed the intersection’s crash history, traffic volume and vehicle speeds.

A flashing beacon already exists at the intersection. The beacon provides additional warning to drivers on Pomona Road and Stoney Knoll Road that they must stop at the intersection with Route 205. The beacon also warns motorists on Route 205 that they are approaching an intersection where traffic may be entering the road.

VDOT will monitor the intersection over the next year to determine the effect of these changes on motorist safety.
