NEW LEADERSHIP NAMED AT FREDERICKSBURG RESIDENCY
Sean Nelson, P.E., will oversee VDOT transportation programs, including highway maintenance and emergency operations, in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties

Official Portrait Sean Nelson_4x6_300DPIFREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has named Sean Nelson, P.E., to the position of Fredericksburg Residency Administrator.

Nelson will oversee highway maintenance, emergency operations and snow removal along 2,244 miles of state-maintained roads in the counties of Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford. He will also serve as the primary

local government liaison for all VDOT transportation programs.

“Sean Nelson has an outstanding record of excellence at VDOT, and I look forward to the energy, enthusiasm and experience he will bring to leading the Fredericksburg Residency,” said Quintin Elliott, VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Administrator. “Since arriving at the Fredericksburg District in 2010, Sean led a dramatic improvement in interstate and primary pavement conditions. He has high expectations for everything he undertakes, and I know he will deliver results for Fredericksburg area motorists.”

Most recently, Nelson was named Assistant Fredericksburg Residency Administrator in August 2012.

Prior to that role, Nelson served as Fredericksburg District Pavement Manager. He oversaw a $40 million annual budget and maximized funds to enhance the quality of the ride for motorists along Interstate 95 and primary roads, such as Route 1, Route 3 and Route 17. Currently, 100 percent of interstate pavement in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties meets or exceeds state standards, and 83 percent of primary pavement meets or exceeds standards.

Nelson joined VDOT in 2005 through the Engineer Associate Program for recent college graduates. Nelson worked in VDOT’s Central Office Materials Section from 2005-2006, and was promoted to District Pavement Engineer in the Culpeper District in 2007.

While in the Culpeper District, Nelson was promoted to serve as Acting Assistant Residency Administrator at the Louisa Residency.

Nelson returned to Central Office in 2008, where he spent two years as assistant to the State Pavement Engineer.

Nelson was raised in Louisa County, and is a 2000 graduate of Louisa County High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University, and holds a Professional Engineer license.

Nelson lives in Henrico County with his wife and son.
