VDOT TO CLOSE TWO STRUCTURES ON SPOTSWOOD FURNACE ROAD IN SPOTSYLVANIA ON WEDNESDAY, OCT. 3
Traffic to be detoured until structures are replaced
FREDERICKSBURG— Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 3, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the bridge over Pipe Dam Run and the bridge over Laroque Run both located on Route 620 (Spotswood Furnace Road) in Spotsylvania County.
An annual routine inspection of the bridges revealed structural deterioration on both structures which prompted VDOT to close the bridges to traffic.
Approximately 450 vehicles cross both bridges daily. The bridges, which were built in 1932, are currently posted for 3-tons. The weight restriction prohibits larger vehicles from crossing the structures.
VDOT is currently developing plans to replace both timber deck structures with a concrete slab that will feature an asphalt riding surface. The bridge replacement schedule will be announced within the next few weeks.
During the closure motorists will encounter a four- mile detour around the bridges. VDOT has established the following detour to navigate around the closed structures:
Use Route 618 (River Road) to Route 3 (Plank Road) to Route 610 (Elys Ford Road) to Route 616 (US Ford Road) back to Route 620 (Spotswood Furnace).
