ROUTE 617 BRIDGE WORK PLANNED NEXT WEEK IN ESSEX COUNTY
Daytime, 12-hour bridge closures are planned on Island Farm Road for August 20-22

FREDERICKSBURG – Next week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is planning to make emergency repairs to the Route 617 (Island Farm Road) bridge over Piscataway Creek in Essex County.

These repairs will take place on Monday, August 20, through Wednesday, August 22. On these dates, the bridge will be completely closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

A complete closure of the bridge is needed to allow repairs to be finished as quickly as possible.

The Route 617 bridge currently has a posted weight limit of 16 tons. VDOT needs to replace the bridge’s timber deck and steel beams. When work is complete, the bridge will have no posted weight limit, and will substantially improve the bridge’s condition.

The rehabilitation work will be performed by VDOT employees.

VDOT and Essex County have coordinated to allow for the continuation of emergency services while the rehabilitation of the bridge is underway.

VDOT will strive to complete work as quickly as possible each day, weather permitting.

Real-time listings of travel times, work zones, and traffic incidents in Virginia are available on VDOT’s 24-hour traffic information website, www.511Virginia.org. Motorists can also access 511Virginia by calling 511 from any telephone in Virginia.
