A detour route is posted around the Almondsville Road bridge over Fox Creek

FREDERICKSBURG—A two-lane bridge on Allmondsville Road (Route 662) over Fox Creek was closed to all traffic today in Gloucester County after an annual inspection of the bridge found a deteriorated bridge beam.

The bridge will be closed until the beam can be repaired using a temporary brace. Workers from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin repairs on Monday.

When the bridge re-opens to traffic, it will have a posted 3-ton weight limit. The bridge was previously able to carry vehicles weighing up to 14 tons.

VDOT recommends motorists use Ark Road (Route 606) and Cappahosic Road (Route 618) as a detour route until the bridge re-opens. Motorists can anticipate an additional 5-10 minutes of travel time to reach their destination using the detour.

Message boards are being posted to provide advance notice of the bridge closure, and signs will be posted along the detour route.

An average of 270 vehicles a day cross the bridge over Fox Creek on Allmondsville Road, according to a VDOT traffic count.

The steel beam bridge has a timber deck and a timber foundation. It was built in 1937, and it is inspected annually.

The bridge is currently scheduled for replacement in the FY 2012-2017 Six-Year Improvement Program.
