NORTHERN NECK WILL TAKE FERRIES OUT OF SERVICE TODAY
Crews prepare for Hurricane Earl

FREDERICKSBURG— At 3 p.m. today the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in the Northern Neck area will cease operations on the Sunny Bank Ferry and the Merry Point Ferry to allow crews to prepare the vessels for the impending impact of Hurricane Earl.

The Sunny Bank ferry is located in Northumberland County and crosses the Little Wicomico River.  The Merry Point ferry is located in Lancaster County is located and crosses the Corrotoman River.

Crews will be moving the vessels away from the shore and locking the navigation cables to keep them anchored in the event of high tide, winds and flooding.  Any fuel stored at the landing site will be removed and the building will be secured.

Both ferries will be back in operation when any risk of storm damage has passed.
