VDOT crews addressing signal delays on Route 17
(Gloucester Point Project Delays)

FREDERICKSBURG– The Virginia Department of Transportation signal technicians are working to correct the timing of the signal at the intersection of Route 17 and Lafayette at Gloucester Point.

Commuters on Rt. 17 north have experienced long delays this week at the base of the Coleman Bridge due to a new traffic pattern established in conjunction with the Rt. 17 improvement project.

Phase I of the project located just north of the toll booth began this week and required a shift of all traffic and the elimination of the turn lane; creating a no left turn pattern prior to the intersection of Rt. 17 and Lafayette Heights Drive (Route 1206).  The left turn arrow at the signal is being adjusted to provide a longer turn cycle and allowing more cars to clear the intersection per cycle.   Once the timing has been adjusted crews will continue to monitor the traffic flow to ensure that delays are kept to a minimum.

This phase of the project should be complete in Spring 2010 at which time the turn lane will be restored.
