REHAB PROJECT BEGINS MONDAY ON RT. 628 BOX CULVERT
Motorists detoured during four-month closure
CULPEPER — Beginning Monday, the Virginia Department of Transportation will close Route 628 (Dearing Road) to rehabilitate a box culvert that carries traffic over a tributary of the Jordan River near Flint Hill in Rappahannock County.
The structure, located 0.2 mile north of Route 659 (Resettlement Road), will be closed to traffic through Aug. 21.
Motorists south of the box culvert should use Route 659, turn left on Route 606 (Fodderstack Road), left on Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) and left on Route 630 (Hittles Mill Road), which carries traffic back to Route 628. Drivers north of the structure should reverse the detour.
Under a $263,415 construction contract, VDOT contractor DW Miller Construction, Inc. of Chiefland, Florida will work underneath and beside the box culvert to rehabilitate the retaining walls.
The road carries approximately 330 vehicles daily, according to a 2015 traffic count.
Message boards are in place to notify the public of the closure.
