OPAL CROSSOVER PROJECT FINISHES AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
Rt. 15/17/29 improvements near Quarles Truck Stop will reduce crashes

CULPEPER — A safety and access improvement project on Route 15/17/29 (James Madison Highway) at Opal was completed Nov. 1, more than a month ahead of schedule.

The project involved closing two of three median crossovers near Quarles Truck Stop and reconstructing the remaining crossover to provide directional left-in, left-out access. Without making major adjustments to the roadway, these modifications improve safety by reducing the number of traffic conflicts.

Virginia Department of Transportation contractor General Excavation, Inc. of Warrenton began the project in late August with a scheduled completion date of Dec. 11. Their work was completed under a $1.7 million construction contract.

As resources allow, VDOT is planning additional improvements along the corridor from Route 17 to Route 1013 (Burke Lane), including addressing the median crossover near Clark Brothers Gun Shop and East Coast gas station.
