RT. 29 CROSSOVER AT RT. 718 TO BE CLOSED MONDAY
Lanes closed, left turns restricted at intersection; motorists to be detoured

CULPEPER — On Aug. 8, the median crossover on Route 29 (James Madison Highway) at Route 718 (Mountain Run Lake Road) in Culpeper County will be closed as construction advances on the intersection improvement project.

The crossover closure will allow VDOT contractor Chemung Contracting Corp. of Pine City, New York to remove the traffic signals at the intersection and the advance warning signs from its approaches. With the closure, traffic on Route 718 will not be able to make left turns onto Route 29 north. Left turns from Route 29 north onto Route 718 will also be prohibited. Right turns onto and from Route 718 will continue to be permitted.

To reach Route 718 from Route 29 north, motorists should follow the posted detour via Route 1250 (Granite Boulevard). Route 718 traffic wishing to travel north on Route 29 should also use Route 1250.

During the six-month construction period, through traffic in both directions on Route 29 will be reduced to a single lane between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A work zone speed limit will also be in effect in on Route 29 when lane closures are in place. At this time, the speed limit will be lowered from 60 mph to 50 mph only in the southbound lanes of the project, where construction is beginning. As work gets underway on northbound Route 29, the 50 mph work zone speed limit will be in effect in both directions of the project corridor.

Message boards will be stationed on area roads to notify motorists of the traffic pattern change. Temporary signs and pavement markings will be installed on Route 718 at the approach to Route 29 to indicate that only right turns are permitted. Motorists on southbound Route 29 should remain alert for right-turning traffic at the intersection.

The $866,370 construction contract has a completion date of January 5, 2017. More details are available on VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/mtnrunlake.asp.
