SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RT. 15-53 ROUNDABOUT PROJECT
Proposed roadway improvement in Fluvanna Co. is subject of Jan. 15 public hearing

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation invites the public to attend an upcoming hearing on the proposed construction of a roundabout at Routes 15 and 53 in Fluvanna County. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Fluvanna County Public Library, 214 Commons Blvd., Palmyra.

At the open house-style hearing, the public can review project plans, ask questions and obtain information about the project’s timeline, cost and travel impacts, as well as provide feedback on the project orally or in writing. Written comments can also be submitted by mail to John Rose, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701 through Jan. 26.

At Routes 15 and 53, VDOT proposes to replace the existing “T” intersection with a single-lane roundabout for improved safety and mobility. This project is consistent with Fluvanna County’s comprehensive plan, which supports the roundabout due to the proximity of Fluvanna County High School two miles west on Route 53, as well as an economic development area planned to the east of the intersection.

The project’s estimated cost is $2.6 million, to be funded with local and state monies through VDOT’s revenue-sharing program. Based on the availability of funding, construction is anticipated to begin in early 2016 and last approximately six months, requiring periodic lane closures.

Approximately 6,500 vehicles use this segment of Route 15 daily, according to 2013 data. The traffic count on Route 53 is 5,000 vehicles per day.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District office. Please call ahead to 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623 to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.
