NETHERS RD. NEAR OLD RAG MOUNTAIN TO CLOSE MAY 19
VDOT crews will repair bridge in Madison Co.; hiking trail access restricted
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close Route 707 (Nethers Road) in Madison County on Tuesday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. The closure will be in place just south of Route 749 (Moon Road), where a VDOT crew will perform bridge work over an unnamed stream.
Built in 1942, the existing timber-deck bridge at this location carries 290 vehicles daily. After an inspection in late 2014, the bridge was posted with a 12-ton weigh limit, which prohibits use by school buses, fire trucks and other large vehicles. The upcoming work involves reinforcing the existing bridge with a narrower temporary structure that can carry all legal-weight vehicles. This structure will remain until the existing bridge can be replaced.
Because Route 707 is a dead-end road, access to the Old Rag Mountain trailhead and residences beyond the bridge will be restricted during the closure. Message boards are in place to alert motorists.
