WORK TO BEGIN ON MADISON COUNTY’S MULATTO RUN BRIDGE
Traffic impacts planned to begin in late November
CULPEPER — Construction is soon to come on the Route 231 (N. Blue Ridge Turnpike) bridge over Mulatto Run in Madison County, located approximately four miles north of the town of Madison.
Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Allegheny Construction Co. of Roanoke was awarded the $3.59 million contract for this project in September and received notice to proceed yesterday. Their first construction activities will include posting work zone signs and installing temporary traffic signals, which will control two-way traffic on a single travel lane while the bridge is under construction. This new traffic pattern is expected to go into place in late November.
This project will replace the existing Mulatto Run bridge, built in 1932, with a concrete structure built to current design standards and rebuild the roadway approaches on both ends of the bridge. This segment of Route 231 carries 3,900 vehicles per day, according to 2013 data.
The project has a fixed completion date of Dec. 18, 2015.
