Public invited to Feb. 11 hearing on proposed rehabilitation of bridge over Wilson Branch

CULPEPER — The proposed rehabilitation of the Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) bridge over Wilson Branch near Flint Hill is the subject of an upcoming public hearing.

The meeting will be hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Rappahannock County Library, 4 Library Road, Washington, VA 22747.

VDOT proposes to replace the superstructure, including the deck and railings, of the existing concrete bridge, which was built in 1923. The bridge’s abutments will be rehabilitated and reused in the project. The restored bridge will widened to 28 feet, an improvement over the current 24-foot width.

Construction will take place in phases to maintain a single 12-foot travel lane, with temporary signals controlling two-way traffic through the work zone. Work is anticipated to begin in fall 2016 and take eight to 12 months to complete.

Approximately 4,100 vehicles use this segment of Route 522 daily, according to a 2012 traffic count.

The project’s estimated cost is $3.01 million and is subject to change as the design is finalized.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by Feb. 21, 2014, to Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
