Public invited to Jan. 16 meeting; comments accepted through Jan. 28

CULPEPER — The proposed replacement of the Route 637 (Jericho Road) bridge over Big Indian Run in Rappahannock County is the subject of an upcoming public hearing.

The meeting will be hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Rappahannock County Library, 4 Library Road, Washington, VA 22747.

VDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge, built in 1931, with a two-lane, prestressed concrete slab bridge. At 24 feet wide and 28 feet long, the new bridge meets current design standards.

The proposed bridge will be constructed in phases to maintain a single travel lane on the bridge throughout construction. A temporary signal will control two-way traffic through the work zone. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2015 and take 12 to 15 months to complete.

Approximately 250 vehicles use Route 637 daily, according to a 2011 traffic count.

The project’s estimated cost is $1.88 million and is subject to change as the design is finalized.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by Jan. 28, 2013, to Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
