VDOT will accept public comments through April 5

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will host a public hearing on the proposed replacement of the Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) bridge over Thumb Run in Fauquier County.

The meeting will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, at the Orlean Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 6838 Leeds Manor Road, Orlean, Virginia 20128.

VDOT invites public input on the project, which would replace the existing structure over Thumb Run, built in 1925, with a new two-lane, prestressed concrete slab bridge. The proposed bridge will be 54 feet long and 26 feet wide and will be in the same approximate location as the existing bridge and approaches.

An additional structure located approximately 350 feet south of the bridge that spans the tributary of Thumb Run is proposed to be replaced with a new concrete box culvert.

The project will be constructed using a phased road closure to allow access for local traffic. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2015 and take 15 months to complete.

According to a 2011 count, approximately 580 vehicles use Route 688 daily.

The project’s estimated cost is $2.3 million and is subject to change as the design is finalized.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by April 5, 2013, to Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
