Dick Woods Rd. culverts replaced, final cleanup and paving still to be completed

CULPEPER – Route 637 (Dick Woods Road) in Albemarle County reopened to traffic late this afternoon. The road was closed early Friday after torrential rains washed out the road by undercutting culvert pipes that carried storm water beneath the road.

The Virginia Department of Transportation worked through the weekend to replace the culverts and repair the storm damage. Temporary repairs were completed late this afternoon but the permanent pavement, guardrail and pavement marking work will not be completed until next week.

Until the permanent surface is placed the road surface will be gravel. Motorists should treat the area as a work zone, continue to use caution while driving across that surface and be aware of loose stone. On Tuesday morning VDOT will restrict traffic to one lane while the final clean up of the work area is completed. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers; drivers should use caution when approaching the work zone and anticipate brief delays.

Motorists should check VDOT’s traffic information web site,, or call 511 for real-time information about traffic conditions and delays. Android and iPhone users can also download a free 511 app that provides real-time traffic information based on their location.
