EMMET STREET WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL 7 A.M.
Contractor removing crane used to set deck beams for new McCormick Road bridge

CULPEPER – Route 29 Business (Emmet Street) will remain closed at McCormick Road in the city of Charlottesville until approximately 7 a.m. while the crane used to set beams for the new bridge deck is disassembled and removed. The road was to have reopened at 6 a.m.

The operation to set the bridge deck beams was delayed last night from its planned 9 p.m. start due to severe weather in the area. Lightning is safety hazard and the crane could not be set up and positioned until the thunderstorms cleared the area.

Emmet Street will be closed again overnight, from 9 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Wednesday, to complete the placement of the new bridge deck beams. Motorists should use alternate routes.

Corman Construction Inc.  is replacing the bridge superstructure under a contract with the Virginia Department of Transportation. The bridge will remain closed until late July. Emmet Street will remain open during the project. More information about the project can be found on VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/mccormickrdbridge.asp.

Motorists should check VDOT’s traffic information web site, www.511virginia.org, or call 511 for real-time information about traffic conditions and delays. Android and iPhone users can also download a free 511 app that provides real-time traffic information based on their location.
