SUMERDUCK RUN BRIDGE IS SUBJECT OF PUBLIC HEARING
VDOT invites input on proposed project at July 31 hearing
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a design public hearing on a project to replace the aging Route 651 (Sumerduck Road) bridge over Sumerduck Run in Fauquier County. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Remington Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, 200 East Marshall Street, Remington, VA 22734.
VDOT proposes to construct a new concrete bridge that will be 55 feet in length and 30 feet long, including two four-foot paved shoulders. The bridge’s design will include architectural treatments on the bridge railings.
During construction, which is expected to last eight months, VDOT will close Route 651 to through traffic. The proposed detour route uses Route 615 (Silver Hill Road) to Route 633 (Dyes Lane) to Route 17 (Marsh Road) and back to Route 651. Traffic data from 2010 indicates that Route 651 carries 1,064 vehicles per day.
The existing Route 651 bridge is of concrete-slab construction and was built in 1933. It is substandard in width at 19.5 feet.
The project’s estimated cost is $3.11 million and is subject to change as the project’s design is finalized. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2014 and finish in spring 2015.
Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.
VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the project and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by August 10, 2012, to Howard Tomlinson, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
