SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS TO RT. 53 CORRIDOR PROPOSED
Two intersection projects are subject of April 25 hearing
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation invites public comment on two proposed projects to improve safety along Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) in Albemarle and Fluvanna counties.
A design public hearing will be held Wednesday, April 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Fluvanna County Public Library, 214 Commons Blvd., Palmyra.
VDOT proposes to construct a right-turn lane on Route 53 westbound at Route 729 (Milton Road) in Albemarle County, in order to improve sight distance at the intersection. At Route 618 (Lake Monticello Road) in Fluvanna County, VDOT will construct a left-turn lane on Route 53 eastbound; offset the existing right-turn lane on Route 53 westbound; and move the Route 618 southbound stopbar further south to increase the line of sight.
These projects are part of the Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, which identifies high-crash locations and finds affordable solutions to improve safety. The two proposed projects are considered the second phase of STARS along Route 53, following three other intersection improvements at the entrance to Monticello, Kenwood Farm Lane, and Route 20 (Scottsville Road), all located in Albemarle County.
Approximately 7,100 vehicles use this portion of Route 53 daily.
The estimated cost for both projects is $1,754,250, funded by the Highway Safety Improvement Program, and is subject to change as the projects’ design is finalized. The projects are expected to be advertised in October 2013 and completed by August 2014.
Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.
VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by May 7, 2012, to Mr. Brian Arnold, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
