MCCORMICK ROAD CLOSED JUNE 1 FOR BRIDGE WORK
Six-hour closure to pedestrians, vehicles necessary for emergency repairs
CULPEPER — Tomorrow, the Virginia Department of Transportation will close the segment of Route 302 (McCormick Road) that spans Route 29 Business (Emmet Street) at the University of Virginia for emergency bridge work.
McCormick Road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians on June 1 from 9 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. while a VDOT crew repairs the bridge’s deteriorated concrete deck. The work will include placing a steel plate on the driving surface, as well as shielding the underside of the bridge in order to protect the Emmet Street roadway below from debris.
Beginning this afternoon, VDOT will close one lane of traffic on Emmet Street, maintaining one lane in each direction. This traffic pattern will remain in place through tomorrow afternoon when the repairs are completed. Motorists should be alert for message boards in the vicinity of the work.
The steel-beam, concrete-deck bridge was built in 1931 and is inspected every year in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
