Six-hour closure to pedestrians, vehicles necessary for emergency repairs

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the segment of Route 302 (McCormick Road) that spans Route 29 Business (Emmet Street) at the University of Virginia again on June 4 to finish emergency bridge work.

McCormick Road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians on Monday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. while a VDOT crew repairs the bridge’s deteriorated concrete deck. The work will include milling the pavement to inset a steel plate on the concrete deck and paving over it.

During the week of June 11, VDOT will close one northbound travel lane on Emmet Street to install shielding on the underside of the bridge, which will protect the roadway below from debris. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.

Motorists should be alert for message boards in the vicinity of the work.

The steel-beam, concrete-deck bridge was built in 1931 and is inspected every year in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards.
