RT. 640 IN LOUISA COUNTY CLOSED JUNE 27-JULY 1 FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
New bridge over Roundabout Creek will allow weight limit to be lifted
CULPEPER — Route 640 (Old Mountain Road) in Louisa County will be closed to through traffic in late June to replace the aging bridge that spans Roundabout Creek.
The work will begin on June 27, at which time a 0.6-mile stretch of Route 640 will be closed between Route 208 (Courthouse Road) and Route 604 (Roundabout Road). The work is expected to be finished and the road reopened on July 1.
During the closure, signed detours will be in place for traffic using Route 640. Eastbound motorists will be directed west on Route 208, then east on Route 250, and east on Route 604. Westbound traffic will reverse the detour.
Virginia Department of Transportation crews will remove the current bridge’s aged deck and beams. The bridge will receive galvanized steel beams and a new timber deck.
The existing bridge has a six-ton posted limit, which means that some emergency vehicles are not able to cross it. Once completed, the new bridge will be capable of carrying all legal loads.
