New bridge over Jacobs Run will allow weight limit to be lifted

CULPEPER — Route 606 (Dickerson Road) in Albemarle County just north of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport will be closed to through traffic in mid-May to replace the aging bridge that spans Jacobs Run.

The work will begin on May 9, at which time a 0.42-mile stretch of Route 606 will be closed approximately one half-mile north of Route 850 (Chris Greene Lake Road). Local traffic and emergency vehicles will be able to access driveways on both sides of the closure. The work is expected to be finished and the road reopened on May 20.

During the closure, signed detours will be in place for traffic using Route 606. Northbound motorists will be directed from Route 606 onto Route 1666 (Quail Run), then onto Route 1571 (Lewis & Clark Road), and then north on Route 29 (Seminole Trail). From Route 29, motorists will turn left on Route 763 (Dickerson Lane), which intersects with Route 606. Southbound traffic will reverse the detour.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews will remove the current bridge’s aged deck and beams and cast a new concrete pier cap. The bridge will also receive galvanized steel beams and a new timber deck, updating it to current design standards.

The existing bridge has a nine-ton posted limit, which means that some emergency vehicles are not able to cross it. Once completed, the new bridge will be capable of carrying all legal loads.
